Reporting to the Superintendent Process Analysis and Improvement within the Whaleback team this position will be responsible for systematically analysing plant performance, defining how best to prioritise, plan and implement improvements that safely deliver the most value and preserve the benefits created through standard work from a Processing Production perspective.

Additional responsibilities will include:
  • Ensure conformance with the BHP Billiton Charter, the BHP Billiton Group Level Documents, Code of Conduct and relevant statutory obligations.
  • Demonstrates an overriding commitment to health, safety, environment responsibility and sustainable development.
  • Produce production standards, targets and operating philosophies that ensure effective production process controls are maintained.
  • Monitor and analyse the performance of the production processes and outcomes to
    • ensure plant production is predictable, stable and consistently operating at the target level of performance and within normal variation, and
    • Identify and prioritise opportunities for performance improvement in plant availability/utilisation/rate to ensure we safely meet our business plan in a stable predictable manner.
  • Identify opportunities for cost reduction and work to improve cost performance.
  • Complete business case justification for prioritised improvements and facilitate hand over to execution teams.
  • Assist with the planning, design and verification of improvement projects and ensure improvements are sustained, replicated and achieve desired outcome from a metallurgical perspective.
  • Liaise with Production Planning with forecast planning providing plant capability and contributing to a robust plan to deliver production throughput and grade results.
  • Hold the responsibility of Registered Dam Engineer for the site to ensure the tailings storage facility is well managed.

Skills and Experience

As the successful candidate you will possess the following:
  • A Bachelor degree in either Applied Science or Engineering specializing in Mineral Processing or Metallurgy
  • Significant experience in Production / Process Analysis & Improvement with plant experience in a dense medium separation plant preferred
  • Exposure to tailings storage facility management desirable
  • Strong communication, negotiation, influencing and relationship management skills
  • Demonstrated oral and written English language proficiency
  • Strong track record of continuous improvement & project delivery
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Minimum of C class manual drivers licence


In this residential role you will be based in Newman, Western Australia. You will be working at the closely located 'Mount Whaleback' mine site, which at more than five kilometres long and nearly 1.5 kilometres wide is the biggest single-pit open-cut iron ore mine in the world. The 7,000 strong population of Newman enjoys well-established town facilities including a newly revitalised town centre and sporting facilities. As a gateway to the Karijini national park, you will be in close proximity to spectacular gorges, water courses and stunningly unique landscapes. As this is a residential position you will also be provided with subsidised rental accommodation in addition to power and water subsidies
