As an Apprentice Support Engineer, your role includes:
As an Apprentice Support Engineer, you will be involved with helpdesk actives from day 1. Your main role initially will be to answer incoming calls to the helpdesk by telephone and email, ensure that the calls are logged accurately on the Helpdesk CRM system and that all cases are responded and dealt with within the clients contractual times. You will also assist the other engineers with routine maintenance tasks and installations both from the office and on client sites.
Your role will also include managing the preventative maintenance calendar, liaising with clients and the engineers to ensure that regular maintenance visits are booked and carried out as per the client`s contract requirements. You will also be expected to assist with the building of PC systems, including assembly from components, and repairs to equipment that comes in to our workshop, including PC`s, laptops and printers.
As you become more capable you will be expected to take responsibility for some of the home user cases including workshop repairs to PC`s and laptops, preparation of new systems for clients and initial training and handover of new systems.
As well as your Microsoft training with Firebrand you will be expected to study towards certification with other vendors including ESET, ProofPoint, Acronis and Intel. The employer is accredited to many different vendors and it is important that all their employees maintain the level of training and certification required for them to maintain their partner levels.
Finally, with the training and experience you gain, within time you will be expected to take a proactive approach to resolving faults by remote and telephone support and within the year we would expect you to be taking a full, independent role within the helpdesk, recording, managing and resolving cases and managing small desktop-based projects and installations. By the end of your apprenticeship, you will have a good grounding in Desktop and Network support and start expanding your skillset to advanced desktop support and server systems.
What skills and experience do I need?
- At least five GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grade C or above including Maths, English and either IT or Science.
- Confident and outgoing personality
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Good time-keeping
- You will be lifting and carrying equipment so must be fit and able to do so.
- Most importantly, you will be representing the company on client sites and when clients visit their offices. They provide company branded shirts and fleeces and you must be professional and presentable at all times.
- An excellent attitude towards customer service is a must.
