Client Summary:

Our client is a global leader in Rolling Stock vehicle manufacturing, service and maintenance.

Shorterm are currently looking to recruit a Field Maintenance Engineer who will be responsible for a range of activities in support of the Engineer Manager in order to deliver the technical support and engineering obligations required by the Services TSA contract associated with the Class 378 fleet of Electrostar Trains.

The role encompasses elements of Performance Management, Systems Engineering and Reliability Engineering. Whilst individual Project Engineers may specialise or have expertise in one area, it is expected that the post holder will support the range of engineering roles required for execution of the project.

Job Summary:

The role is geared around carrying out fault investigation work on trains in service and covers all systems of which examples would be: doors, HVAC, driver controls, lighting, PIS (passenger information systems), engine and traction systems. This position will be around 90% based in a maintenance office environment with the further 10% of the time hands on in the depot.

The successful applicant will have to investigate faults from technical data, from their own data analysis, from communication with technicians in the field and maintenance engineers on depot. Once the data has been collated / analysed, this has to be reported along with supporting information / evidence such as photos. This information is then communicated to internal management and to the customer.

Another element to the role is actual hands on fault finding / investigation, when on occasions you'll be asked to go out into the depot to advise technicians on how to resolve issues and to resolve them yourself.

The Field Maintenance Engineer will be accountable for effective management and leadership of individual tasks and areas of responsibility assigned. The Field Maintenance Engineer is accountable for working in a safe manner and shall be accountable at all times for ongoing identification of engineering and safety risks associated with their area of responsibility and that these risks are documented and mitigated.

Provide technical support to resolve performance or maintenance issues and enhance knowledge of the train systems performance. Support both the Project and Engineering Manager with a range of engineering, performance and management activities as required in order to meet TSA contract obligations.

Monitor, analyse, investigate and develop solutions in a timely manner to resolve technical issues associated with the operation of the fleets.

Accountable for technical, incident and accident investigation and development of appropriate containment / solutions in order to maintain and improve reliability / performance against targets.

Accountable for measurement of availability, reliability and safety targets as well as claims management and fault attribution as required.

Accountable for provision of written reports and technical information including instructions, analysis, specifications and training material in a timely manner as required , meeting Business or TSA obligations.
Assist, guide and support Technicians and colleagues to work effectively and safely as a team to deliver high quality services in order to deliver customer satisfaction.
Identify where cross-site initiatives can be applied to improve engineering processes, standardisation or performance. Ensure professional standards and codes of conduct are maintained.
Accountable for the development of safe and effective modifications or changes to maintenance specifications to improve performance, reduce costs, improve safety or meet customer requests.
Accountable for ensuring changes are carefully documented, considered for safety risks and conducted in accordance with formal change control processes.
Ensure Training and work packages are delivered to time and budget and meet project scope and customer expectations.
Deliver material technical support, review material performance against specification, review reliability and obsolescence of parts and monitor material specification against expected performance. Identify new products with a potential for performance improvement.


Educated to high standard in an engineering discipline, (i.e. HND/HNC).
Typically 2-4 years' experience in a relevant role.
Relevant practical engineering experience in design or maintenance.
Significant technical knowledge of design and maintenance of train systems.
Strong IT skills and the ability to interpret and act upon available data.
Must be strong in MS Office packages and ideally have experience in SAP & MAXIMO.

Person Profile/Experience:

Ideal candidates would be from a Rolling Stock / Rail background but other industries may be considered
Computer literate
Keen eye for detail
Able to read detailed electrical schematics
Able to carry out electrical fault finding
Ability to communicate and mediate with the client
Ability to communicate and mediate with the Shift Production Managers
Able to work in a high pressure environment and to prioritise work loads
Ability to see patterns or continual faults in reliability data


A must is a formal electrical engineering qualification i.e. apprenticeship, Degree, HND, HNC, 16th/17 edition, 2391/2392 testing.
