The programme is a very dynamic, information technology-focused effort with multiple subcontractors supporting an operationally oriented customer with numerous mission critical demands. The systems include a collection of infrastructure components of servers, storage, workstations, networking and printers, and also a number of image analysis, processing, storage and retrieval software solutions. The systems are deployed across a number of sites in the UK with a mobile field deployed component for use in the UK and abroad.

The Role

Raytheon UK is seeking Software Development & Integration Engineers as part of a programme engineering team to deliver maintenance and development of the mission critical applications within the COTS and bespoke software baseline. Dedicated development, test and integration environments are available to support problem investigation and resolution as well as distribution of new software releases.
This role offers a skilled and motivated Software Development & Integration Engineer an exciting opportunity to join the Defence Intelligence Engineering team. The successful candidate will find themselves working on programmes at various stages of the systems engineering lifecycle, gaining experience and an understanding of how Engineering and Raytheon operate.

The role involves engineering in the full systems engineering lifecycle from requirements analysis through to design, build, test and acceptance into live service.

The role will include validating and verifying the design artefacts from internal teams or subcontractors and supporting the integration and testing of the third party subsystem deliverables. There is also system transitioning and data migration to be planned, designed and tested.

The main tasks of the role are:

•Develop product functionality, user interfaces and performance improvements;
•Document design and advise on product support material;
•Investigate product issues and develop solutions to customer problems;
•Develop test plans and methodologies to ensure product meets Raytheon quality standards;
•Lead continuous technical improvement and re-architecting activities as directed by Raytheon Service

Team management;

•Updating software design artefacts;
•Interfacing with COTS vendors for technical support;
•Provide technical support (e.g. Requirements Analysis and System Design) to Raytheon programmes delivering new capability into operations;
•Validating design documentation from subcontractor teams;
•Implement the detailed design by building Linux and Windows servers, Windows workstations, configuring storage, network switches, installing COTS applications;
•Locking down the system using GAP and SCM generated Active Directory GPOs;
•Preparing and executing test scripts;
•Preparing system data migration and transition plans;
•Analyse and resolve system defects.
Candidate Requirements:

•Good experience and understanding of software and systems engineering principles and lifecycle;
•Expertise in J2EE development - specifically with web application development;
•Experience of the Eclipse or similar IDE;
•Experience working with XML through Java;
•Experienced in developing software using Google Web Toolkit, Dojo Toolkit and Javascript;
•Oracle 10g/11g: experience of programming in PL/SQL and Java;
•Knowledge of the integration of computer hardware including networking in a secure environment;
•Experience of the installation and configuration of Windows server software and Windows workstations;
•Recent practical experience and expertise in the integration and configuration of COTS software to meet defined system requirements; e.g. Sophos, Lumension Device Control, What's Up, MS Office, ESRI ArcGIS, ERDAS Imagine, BAE SOCET SET, Photoshop, Oracle, SQL Server, etc.
•Knowledge of using Active Directory and Group Policy Objects to enforce security requirements;
•Proven track record in the maintenance of complex IT systems;
•Experience in IT architectures;
•Experience in integration test and requirements verification;
•Experience of integrating engineering components from a subcontractor;
•Configuration management experience, and experienced in using SCM tools (e.g. ClearCase);
•Able to carry out duties with minimal supervision;
•A proven track record of making a contribution to the success of a number of programmes;
•Skilled in problem analysis and resolution in a secure environment;
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
•Willingness to work out of hours on occasion.
•Willing and able to obtain the highest levels of UK Security Clearances


•Experience of large complex secure systems;
•Windows system administration experience;
•Experience of low level design in complex systems environments;
•Knowledge/experience of GIS and image processing application software;
•Experience of designing, implementing and using secure Web services;
•Knowledge of using Microsoft Security Compliance Manager 2.5 and GAP;
•JavaServer Faces;
•Websphere Portal / App Server experience;
•Experience with business process management software (Fujitsu IBPM);
•Programming for GIS applications;
•Programming for Web Services;
•Microsoft certification;
•Certification to ISTQB-BCS Certified Test Foundation level;
