Overview - Design Engineer

Our client is the principal contractor on a complex and multi-faceted 10 year framework contract across Scotland. The scheme covers a wide variety of utilities based works, such as telecoms, power, water and gas, including all associated civil engineering aspects. The construction phase of the framework is now in full swing and is scheduled to run for the duration, so this position represents a long term and stable career opportunity to work on an immensely challenging scheme.

Our client is now looking to recruit an experienced Design Engineer (Permanent or Contract) whom will be responsible for to prepare, develop and check a wide range of designs to suit the contract requirements. You will ensure that designs are deployed effectively, economically and in accordance with all appropriate regulations and specifications to allow the company to minimise risks and maximise profits on their contracts. The projects will range across all areas within the Water, Pipelines and Utilities sectors.


• Provide design guidance and support to regional delivery teams
• Represent the design department at all levels within the business including client meetings
• To provide low cost, high quality Designs to allow the company to minimise risks and maximise sub-programme gain share
• Provide design solutions that meet all of the requirements the Project / Programme Mandates
• Produce design documents which are cost effective, meet the requirements of the specification and which can be purchased, installed and commissioned effectively
• The term 'cost' is to embrace all costs associated with the design and the subsequent construction of the design
• To be cost effective the whole out turn cost of the design solution must be considered including design time costs, material costs, erection costs and any impact that the design solution might have on other disciplines
• Ensure that standard designs and design practices are utilised wherever possible
• Attend internal design meetings
• Liaise with other design disciplines and the client
• Attend and lead design meetings with Clients
• Review and approve / comment on sub-contractor designs
• Gain approval of designs from Clients
• Motivate team members by a positive attitude, knowledge, experience and guidance
• Ensure designs produced and those of sub-contractors meet the requirements of the specification
• Ensure designs produced and those of sub-contractors are in accordance with all appropriate regulations
• Champion design Health and Safety
• Ensure designs are within budget and produce the best overall outcome for the business


• Ideally able to demonstrate a stable career path with a reputable utility based organisation
• Ability to join an existing and established business and contribute to various areas in a manner with enthusiasm and drive
• Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, being able to relate to people at all levels in an organisation and to establish and maintain respect both professionally and personally
• To have previous experience of multi discipline contracts design, coupled with familiarity with the relevant technical specification requirements
• Disciplined experience of regular reporting procedures
• Must possess an excellent understanding of being a member of a design department in a fast paced environment with the ability to manage and deliver the daily design processes
• To have previous experience of working in a client/end user focused environment
• Expertise to benchmark, understand best practice, collating and analysing information on contracts and the client
• Ensuring maximisation of business return whilst maintaining and developing internal and external client relationships via high levels of service
• Be able to operate hands-on in a non-confrontational manner and thrive in a team-orientated environment
• Must be able to demonstrate the ability to successfully manage client relationships but also demonstrate a lead from the front mentality with an ability to get things done
• Must be comfortable with client presentations and interviews
• Ability to promote alternative solutions through design and implementation of new concepts
• Proven experience of networking or communicating with clients and / or their advisers

This challenging and exciting opportunity, based in the Central Belt, requires an individual with a strong technical background and demonstrable experience in taking the design lead on utilities based contracts / frameworks. A highly attractive basic salary (permanent) plus extensive benefits package or exceptional day rate (contract) is on offer, along with longevity of work given the works have a further ten years before completion.
