Job Description

Performs research and/or development laboratory tasks; tests and experiments.

  • Responsible for performing routine research and/or development laboratory tasks and experiments.

  • Calibrates and maintains laboratory equipment and inventory levels for laboratory supplies.

  • Performs basic tests and experiments and documents results.

  • Makes detailed observations and may analyze data and interpret results.

  • Identifies and recommends improvements that may increase efficiency and improve quality.

  • Maintains record keeping system.

  • May provide guidance and training to less-experienced technicians.

  • Participates in special projects as required.


Associates Degree in a scientific or technical discipline; or the equivalent combination of education; professional training; or work experience.


3-5 years of related scientific experience.

Research Technician (Structural Biology Research Tech) a. Provide technical support in the research and development of novel medical countermeasures against wound infections. Areas of expertise may include: 1. Molecular biology 2. Microbiology 3. Immunology 4. X•ray crystallography and other methods to elucidate the molecular structure of large• and small•molecules 5. Various chromatographic systems 6. structure•function relationships b. Contribute to the development of research protocols and grant proposals and in the conduct of research related to trauma•related infections. c. Perform routine laboratory duties required for the smooth and safe operation of laboratory such as maintaining a supply of clean glassware; properly disposing of hazardous biological and chemical waste; preparing reagents; and maintaining an inventory of laboratory chemicals. d. Maintain a laboratory notebook in which accurate and complete records of laboratory work in accordance with QASP and contract requirements to include modifications. e. Follow laboratory standard operating procedures and specific written experimental protocols as well as oral instructions in performing assigned experimental work. f. Submit reports and data summaries as requested. g. Comply with occupational health and safety standards and other applicable regulations and guidelines which may include medical surveillance. h. Attend seminars; scientific conferences; and meetings as required. i. Assist in monitoring of supplies and preparing supply requests for approval. j. Alternative Bacterial Disease Branch collateral duty officer in accordance with Safety Office and other applicable guidelines; as required.
