Job Description

Applies basic welding processes to join; surface; fabricate; or repair parts of metal or other weldable materials.

1. Applies appropriate welding processes to join; surface; fabricate; or repair parts of metal or other weldable materials.

2. Works from blueprints; engineering sketches; charts or work orders.

3. Lays out and marks points on parts or subassemblies using rule; square; scribe or templates.

4. Positions pieces to be welded into jigs; holding fixtures; guides and steps using measuring instruments and hand tools.

5. Inspects completed work for conformance to specifications.

6. Provides guidance and work leadership to less-experienced welders.

7. May serve as a team leader.

8. Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures.

9. Participates in special projects as required.


1. Requires a High School Diploma or GED.

2. Technical or vocational training preferred.

3. One or more professional certifications may be required; depending on job assignment.


3-5 years of related welding experience.

1. Requires 1-2 years of related surface ship and or submarine structural welding experience.

2. SMAW/FCAW/GTAW (Stainless / Copper Nickel and Carbon steel) certified welder.

3. Capable of passing a weld qualification test in accordance with NAVSEA Technical Publication S9074-AQ-GIB-010/248.

4. High School diploma or GED; plus technical/vocational training; or the equivalent combination of education; technical training; or work experience.

1. The ability to perform complex welder work on board US Navy Ships and Submarines. 2. The ability to read and interpret complex NAVSEA drawings and/or sketches. 3. The ability to follow written and verbal instructions. 4. An understanding of power tools and their usage. 5. The knowledge of the principles; methods; and techniques used in the fabrication of structural components to include; simple and complex foundations; piping and electrical hangers etc. 6. A working knowledge of NAVSEA Standard Items 009-07; Latest Edition.
