We are Pretivm – a Canadian mining company, headquartered in Vancouver, BC and the proud owner of the Brucejack Gold Mine. Brucejack Mine is a 3,800 tonnes-per-day high-grade gold underground mine located in northwestern British Columbia, approximately 65 kilometers north of Stewart.

About the Opportunity

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Mine Engineer Student to join the Brucejack Mine in Northwestern, British Columbia .

Located approximately 65 kilometers from Stewart, you will report to the Chief Mining Engineer, or designate and work a rotating schedule encompassing 13 days on/off.

The position will require work from the Smithers and Vancouver offices from time to time. The purpose of the Mine Engineering Student is to assist and support the engineering team at the Brucejack Mine with underground design, layout and construction. The incumbent is also responsible for researching, collecting and tabulating engineering data to support the safe and efficient implementation of mine development engineering systems in a safe, professional, and timely manner.

Key duties include: 

  • Conducting research to determine location and methods of extracting minerals while collaborating with the geological personnel to determine location, size, accessibility and estimated value of mineral deposit
  • Conducting research, collecting & analyzing data and recommending lay-out design for mine construction operations such as location, development of shafts, tunnels, chambers and position of ore bodies and waste
  • Assisting in the design, development and implementation of projects such as water and power supply/distribution, ventilation and drainage control
  • Researching and devising methods and locations for storage/stockpiling of excavated ore and waste materials
  • Analyzing labor requirements, equipment needs and operational costs to compute and prepare operational budget reports
  • Creating and maintaining cash flow models
  • Researching and ascertaining extraction risks while using computer software applications to maximise planning, production and extraction systems and techniques
  • Planning and scheduling regular mine maintenance activities, repairs and improvements
  • Inspecting air ventilation and quality at mining areas on periodic basis
  • Communicating project updates, recommendations, concerns and expense to senior staff
  • Identifying problems in mining processes and develop appropriate resolutions
  • Monitoring and communicating operational issues/concerns with mining contractors
  • Providing feedback and identify opportunities to enhance mine designs and plans to successfully develop the project
  • Conducting other activities to support the safe, efficient and successful development of the Brucejack Mine
  • Understanding and ensuring compliance with Pretivm safety policies and governmental safety regulations including Ministry of Mines and WorksafeBC
  • Performing other duties as required
  • The successful candidate will be enrolled in a  4 year Post-Secondary Mining Engineering Degree program with zero to three (0 - 3) years of experience in an underground mining environment.

    In addition, you'll also demonstrate: 

  • Very strong spreadsheet and word processing skills (i.e. Microsoft Excel and Word)
  • Proficiency with relevant mining software programs (i.e. AutoCAD, MineSight, or Vulcan etc.)
  • Experience with databases (Microsoft Access) is an asset.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills (English)
  • Leadership, planning, organizational, analytical & problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures
  • Cross cultural awareness & understanding
  • The ability to work at remote location (camp) on a 13 days on, 13 days off, 2 travel days schedule
  • The ability to pass a pre-employment medical screening
  • The ability to lift/move up to 50lbs throughout a work shift
  • The ability to maintain high levels of performance over 12 hour shifts
  • The ability to work in areas of extreme weather conditions
  • The ability to work in close quarters with the team
